Felix MENDELSSOHN (1809-1847) - Sonata in D minor Op. 65 No. 6-1st movement, Chorale and variations
The six organ sonatas, Op. 65, were published in 1845, at the end of the composer's all too short life. This chorale and variations is based on a Lutheran hymn, Vater unser in Himmelreich, the text of which was written by Martin Luther and then combined with an older melody, becoming a theme commonly used since the 16th century, notably by Pachelbel or, on several occasions, by Bach in works for organ and cantatas. This movement begins in a solemn, devotional atmosphere, then becomes more animated, diversified and amplified as the variations progress: the writing, which is very contrapuntal, recalls the musical textures used by Bach in his chorale variations.
