Mélisma - Matthieu Stefanelli
For baritone saxophone and piano
Mélisma
Composed in 2019, Mélisma for baritone saxophone and piano was written for Matthieu Delage during my residency at the Abbaye de la Prée. This work is impregnated with sacred music and finds its sources in a somewhat remote way in Gregorian neumes, hence the title Mélisma, Greek etymology of the word mélisme, representing the undulating suppleness of melodic lines around pivotal notes. The structure is in 4 parts: introduction, A, B, A', forming an alternation between slow and mysterious or expressive moments (introduction and B) and fast, rhythmic and chanted moments (A).
This piece has been recorded for the label Chapeau l'artiste, with Matthieu Delage on baritone saxophone and Magali Albertini on piano.
