Sehnsucht, a wistful yearning opposed to the desolation of sombre melancholy, was defined by Robert Schumann for his friend Wihelm Götte on 2 October 1828:
"In every human being floats an immense longing, something immeasurable, infinite, that no lips can express, a longing that is awakened in those of an epic nature when they find themselves before ruins or pyramids (...), in lyric natures (I am one), when the harmonious world of sound is opened up to them, when evening falls, or a storm breaks out, or the sun rises".
This sentiment permeates the entirety of Schumann's music.
This recording invites you to take a nostalgic stroll through the world of Schumann's Lied for women's choir.
