The clarinet was the source of inspiration for Brahms’ works. A century earlier, the friendship between the clarinettist Stadler and Mozart culminated in the sublime concerto K622, like a luminous farewell. In this case the farewell takes place in the twilight. His source of inspiration having dried up, Brahms was beguiled by the charm of Mühlfeld’s clarinet. He found in it the means of expression that he called his ‘interior autumn’, releasing his final passions.
